A Week In The Bread Aisle: DJ Wreckineyez
When you Google the name DJ Wreckineyez, one of the first results you'll get is this. Sure, it doesn't show Wreck, the official DJ of Asher Roth, in all his turntable glory, but it might be a good representation of a night on the town with the Roth Boys.illRoots: Thanks for linking up with us Wreck! How long have you been DJing?
DJ Wreckineyez: About nine years, I started in my junior year of high school. I didn't really start taking it seriously until my junior year in college though. That's when I realized it was something that I really wanted to pursue, and not just treat it as a hobby.
iR: What was college like for you?
DW: I went to a big party school, UMASS-Amherst, but never really partied. I mainly focused on trying to do well in school and make money DJing parties. I never drank until about five months ago when we did a show in Maryland. An attractive female made me give in! Ever since then, I guess you could say that I've been on a rampage. I was like "Damn! I've been missing out!" We probably already have enough drunken idiot footage of me, accumulated over the last couple months, to make a DVD out of [Laughs]. Now everyone get's to sit back and laugh at me, while I make the dumb mistakes they made in college. Only thing that is great for me, is that I don't have to wake up early and go to class. I guess it all worked out in my favor though. Thanks to Asher Roth, I've been able to re-live that "party life" that I missed out on in college. If I drank in college, I probably would have never graduated.
iR: I've seen some of the footage. Very impressive stuff. How did you first meet Asher?
DW: I met Asher through my boy Jon Bonus, who put me in touch with Scooter. To make a long story short, Scooter was telling me all about Ash and that they were looking for a DJ. I knew that Scooter was known for making power moves, and what he was talking about sounded legit; but I wasn't sold until I sat down/chopped it up with Ash, and got to listen to his music. Right then and there I realized that this was a team that I needed to become part of, especially after seeing Asher, Brain, and Boyder's 'Happy New Week Dance' video, I knew I could totally relate to these dudes [Laughs]. I was real impressed with the tracks that Asher played for me. I saw that he could not only rap his face off, but that he also knew how to make great songs. What was most important though was that fact that, right off the bat, I saw how Ash is a real cool and humble dude who was all about enjoying life, and is 100% about being true to himself. I also found out that, like me, he went to school to be a teacher, and then moved to Atlanta to focus of the music thing. I'm a strong believer in how everything happens for a reason, and feel this is probably the reason why I stopped teaching, and ended up moving to the ATL. It's definitely the best opportunity I've been put in thus far in life.

iR: That's awesome. The 'Happy New Week Dance' is something that everybody should do, every week. What is your favorite track off Asleep In The Bread Aisle?
DW: If I gotta pick one, it's probably 'La Di Da'. When I first got a CD with some of Asher's tracks, I must have listened to this song twenty times in a row. I can relate a lot to it, it's like my anthem because I'm always trying to deal with struggles and stresses in life, while trying to figure out what to do in order to get to that next level. Like many people, every time I feel like I'm getting there, it seems like something or someone is trying to get in the way and bring me down. Lately, I've learned to just not care, and be like "Over!" It's a real catchy song and has a great message.
iR: Produced by Don Cannon, good choice! What would you choose as the best story since being on tour?
DW: Wow, there's so many great stories. I'm seriously having the time of my life and an official tour hasn't even popped off. Most memorable has to be getting the opportunity to open up the MTV Woodie Awards with Asher and The Cool Kids, and then getting to DJ on stage for Q-Tip. I felt like a little kid getting to live his dream. But, as embarrassing as it is, the funniest and best story had to be what happened in Panama City for MTV's Spring Break. Everybody got drunk, but I got completely wasted. I started drinking early in the afternoon after our performance and barely ate all day. We get to the club at night and I start drinking Patron. [It was my] first time ever. Way too much in way too little time. Not good! I guess the next thing that happened, after running around the club while doing the harlem shake, is that I ended up passing out on a couch, puked, which Scooter helped clean up, got a dick drawn on my face, thanks to him for that one too [Laughs], and then got escorted out of the club by two bouncers because I couldn't stand up straight. While I was getting escorted out of the club, with the dick already drawn on my face, I said to Asher and Scooter "If you draw a dick on my face, I'm gonna sucker punch you in the asshole". I guess I also fell asleep and puked again in the taxi or bus ride back to the hotel and randomly awoke singing "The Sky Might Fall", right while CuDi was in the taxi with us. I woke up the next morning still drunk off my ass, couldn't find my glasses, Flip cam or Blackberry, which is the only thing that didn't reappear, and was like "How the hell did I get a dick drawn on my face!?!" Damn! Lesson learned! [Click here to read Brain's version of the same story] I had previously told everyone that if I ever get wasted like I did in Vegas, footage is up on YouTube, make sure I learn my lesson. Sure enough, I got more wasted than I did in Vegas, and like good friends, they made sure I learned a lesson! Ash captured it all on my Flip cam. I was pretty damn mad at myself at first, but now can do nothing but laugh. After watching the footage, it's funny as hell. There's so much good footage. From what happened to me, to Asher, Brain & Boyder grinding on these chicks all night, and then Brain biting some girl in the ass, and then afterwards, them trying to find out how to get back to the hotel, while Brain is dancing in the parking lot. It's hilarious. We all have a blast. That footage will probably get released in the long run.
iR: Wow, that sounds like quite the night. Here comes the bread question: white, wheat or rye?
DW: I used to eat nothing but white bread, but everyone from Asher and Bangley, to my big bro DJ Jamad and even my mother, have nagged at me about how white bread has no nutrients. So, I've been making that move to wheat! Been trying to eat more healthy, it's important.
iR: Great! Thanks so much for your time Mr. Wreckineyez. Asleep In The Bread Aisle in stores April 20th!
