Buff 1: My birth name is Jamall Jernard Bufford. People used to call me Buff, Buff Daddy and J. Buff in high school. A bunch of nicknames my basketball teammates gave me. The Buff stuck, and I just threw a 1 on there to make it more hip hop.
illRoots.com: So you have made quite a name for yourself with you debut "Pure". For those whom haven't heard your new project what can they expect?
Buff 1: They can expect Pure on steroids. Its more powerful, the songs are little more electrifying and have a little more purpose and meaning.
illRoots.com: The most important part of your life right now?
Buff 1: Creating music and performing.
illRoots.com: If you weren't rapping what would you be doing as an occupation?
Buff 1: I'd either be teaching or doing social work. Or an exotic dancer at Watts Club Mozambique.
illRoots.com: You by far are leaps and bounds above a good percentage of rappers out right now, for an upcoming emcee what did you do get, lyrically, where you are now?
Buff 1: I study the game, I'm a student of everything. The good, the bad, the catchy, the lyrical, the musical, the new, the old. ALl of it. I take bits and pieces and apply them to myself.
illRoots.com: The greatest part about coming out of Detroit?
Buff 1: Being around the most talented people in the world.
illRoots.com: Your Top 5 albums ever, regardless of genre?
Buff 1: Hmmm, 1. ATLiens 2. Illmatic 3. Resurrection 4. Soul Food 5. Cuban Linx
illRoots.com: The new album whose on there production wise? favorite cut? most personal joint?
Buff 1: All Lab Techs except one by Black Milk. My favorite song is Real Appeal, and the most personal song is probably Real Appeal and Numbers Can't Measure.
illRoots.com: After putting out such an acclaimed record in "Pure", what areas do you feel that your new album improves on? As well that sophomore curse is always talked about and overly cliche', your thoughts?
Buff 1: On this album, I improved on getting directly to the point I want to make with the song. I improved on my bragging skills. Sophomore curse only happens if you're not talented to begin with. Its hard to fool people twice.
illRoots.com: How do you feel you will influence Hip-Hops new generation of listeners?
Buff 1: I will encourage them to work hard on their craft and creating their own lane/voice.
